Interesting. I thought Spain were very poor with no Isco or Diego Costa playing and the defence was terrible with Marcos Alonso, Nacho and Jonny showing they’re not good enough but England were lucky to scrape a win. They had 3 shots on target and to their credit were clinical and scored all 3 and the direct ball troubled the Spanish defence in the first half. Spain were denied a clear penalty when Pickford pulled back Rodrigo and as last man should probably have been sent off too. You will point to Jonny’s trip on Sterling which was just outside the box and that should have been a free kick and a card for the defender.
All in all, for me, the positives were a clinical first half from the front 3 and a battling performance from a young side. Not sure it’s a new dawn yet. Gomez, Chilwell, Maguire, Winks and Barkley along with the front 3 looked solid. Pickford looked to have panicked and lost his head in the second half, Trippier not a patch on Walker at RB and I’m not convinced about Dier against pace. Glad to see Southgate looking to the future instead of labouring over a past it Rooney and wondering if Jack Wilshere will ever play a full 90 minutes. So bright signs but I’m not overly confident yet.
