http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3120730/Premier-League-25-man-squads.html

bit surprising that Man City named Jerome Boateng as one of their 25 seeing as he was 21 before the transfer window closed (players 21 and under dont have to be named in the squad) and that they have about 30 odd players. i see liverpool have loads of strikers named Exclamation

Now correct me if I wrong, but Arsenal have named 7 'homegrown' players and not one of them is even British, let alone English.

Surely this is missing the whole point of introducing the rule.

If everyone did this, how would it help the future national side?

you dont HAVE to name 8 if your squad size is smaller than 25. i.e, if your squad size is 20 (which is how many arsenal have named i think) then you actually only need name 3 homegrown players. as long as arsenal have 5 free slots that would take them to the 8 hoemgrown in a squad of 25 then they're fine. a team can name 17 players with no homegrown players if they want. but then they'd be relying on their youths to fill the bench. none of this makes sense, why have fifa gone all michele platini?

Why should Arsenal be allowed to name the seven players as 'homegrown' if they had to. They aren't even British, I just don't understand the point of the rule if they can get away with this?

Well, apparently you cant say a player HAS to be english to be homegrown. apparently thats going against the freedom of movement of workers act which some dozey half sighted politicans invented in Brussels. So, a homegrown player can be any nationality as long as he spent 3 years in an English or Welsh football academy (because our FA is for England and Wales) before they turn 22. And yes before you ask Cesc Fabregas is therefor more homegrown than say Kevin Doyle or Alan Hutton (neither were brought through English or Welsh academies)
