It seems that Cazorla was sent off and then the ref allowed Barca to bring on a substitute to replace him, which wasn't very sporting of him.

I'm now looking into the cause of this happening and will have to rerun this game cos no sooner was the illegal sub on the pitch he scored too.

Might take me awhile though, got to find out why it is happening first.

Anybody know what would happen in real life if the ref made a cockup like this in real life ? apart from sacking him would they order a replay ?

The referee issue that appeared in the quarter-final between Charlton and Barcelona is pretty complicated. 

Basically Barcelona had their playmaker sent off and because the playmaker is classed as an important player the system then tried to find somebody to take off so it could bring on the substitute playmaker. Firstly the system looks for players playing poorly but found none. Secondly the system looks for players in positions that aren't used so much in the currently employed tactics and found none.  

At this point the system should have stopped but instead it still bought on the sub playmaker even though it hadn't been able to find anybody to take off.

My first thought was to add another layer of logic to further aid the selection of who to bring off but then I thought, hang on, that may now make matters worse, and do we really want the system to decide who should go off when there is no obvious choice.

Having thought about it for awhile I've decided to remove this feature from the substitute processing.

From now on if one of your outfield players gets sentoff the system will only check for condition 90 replacements and you will have to decide who you want to take off before the game starts in your orders.

The system will continue to handle goalkeepers itself unless you use condition 90 on your subGK.

How does condition 90 work...

In the event of a sending off the system checks all substitutes for a SUBcon=90 and matching SUBpos, then if the REPLsn is on the field he will come off and the sub will go on.

so for instance you are playing MIX and may have your subs setup thus :-

12 Smith 
14 Jones
15 White
16 Black
17 White SUBmin=1 SUBcon=90 REPLsn=4 SUBpos=PM 
13 Wight 

then if you lose your PM sub17 will come on in place of sn=4 and play at playmaker.

Must admit, I've never really bothered with 90s, but I had a situation in my ECC qtr that I'm unsure how I could rectify...perhaps you could give me your take?

Early on, I had my TM (Draxler) injured. The system brought on Walcott to play as TM (Not a TM - but was the closest to TM I had on the bench).

Thing is, saurez had started the match as ST, but would have been my choice to replace Draxler as TM with Walcott coming on as ST instead of Saurez.

Would the Game Mod section allow me to do this somehow?

No, the game mods section moves players around when conditions are met, it doesn't handle situations where important players are sentoff.

For these instances you really need your reserve target man on the bench.

Hmmm, problematic really...

See, I'd be happy for the following to happen:

 - Player sent off/injured (Important position for tactic used eg TM in FAS)
   - System finds TM on bench, chuck him on.
     - If sending off, remove other player. DONE.
   - System doesn't find TM on bench, look for TM already on pitch.
     - If found, make that player TM and chuck on reserve in vacated position.
       - If sending off, remove that player. DONE.

That means that an injury, especially early, doesn't mean you play the rest of the match using a tactic requiring an important position that isn't on the pitch.

Yes that would be ideal and easy to logic but very difficult for the system to sort out in a match situation so at the moment the onus is on you the manager.

Fair enough, just need to make sure there is a TM on the bench (for FAS tactic)...

On a similar note, the Int U21 next opp scout sheets haven't shown the U21 side for a while now - shows a mixture of U21s and Full Int players.

If sn=4 has gone off for some reason then the sub wont come on.
